FLAGSHIP 1 – TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATION AND SUSTAINABLE INTENSIFICATION: JULY – SEPTEMBER 2019 UPDATES

The CGIAR foresight team met in Amsterdam on September 3-5 to advance ongoing activities related to preparation of the CGIAR Foresight Report (CGFR). Foresight experts from 13 of the 15 CGIAR centers participated, with funding from PIM’s Cluster 1.1: Food Systems Futures. Discussions focused on the process for developing the report, inputs on structure and contents, and work planning for 2020 (publication is anticipated in late 2020). At the conclusion of the meeting, participants reported on progress and next steps in an online call with members of the CGFR Steering Committee, which includes four leaders of the CGIAR Research Programs and five Deputy Directors General of the CGIAR Centers. Stay tuned for more news on this CGIAR-wide initiative soon!

Flagship 1 colleagues jointly with IFPRI, the Global Crop Diversity Trust, and the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture organized a meeting on “Crop genetic diversity conversation, exchange, and use: Measuring the global consequences of inaction” on August 26-27, 2019. Participants explored the consequences of scarce financial resources notbeing forthcoming for the conservation, exchange and use of crop diversity. It was an exciting event because few economists have engaged with these questions in the recent past. Read more in this blog.

IFPRI colleagues Alex De Pinto, Claudia Ringler, and Elizabeth Bryan - with support from PIM via Flagship 1 - contributed to the Global Commission on Adaptation report launched on September 10, 2019.

Keith Wiebe, Simrin Makhija, Elizabeth Bryan, and Wei Zhang presented at the IFPRI Policy Seminar “Adapting to New Climate Realities: Doing More, Better, and New” on September 19, where IFPRI researchers and guests outlined innovative approaches to climate challenge adaptation and mitigation. Research presented by the colleagues receives support from PIM as part of Flagship 1 portfolio.

“Capacity development strategies through an agricultural innovation system lens” was the focus of a recent collaboration among partners in several Feed the Future Innovation Labs and CGIAR centers. The initiative, organized by Wageningen University and ResearchMichigan State University, and IFPRI under the auspices of the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Food Security Policy, aimed to help other Innovation Labs improve the design and implementation of their capacity development strategies. Two learning events, convened in August and September as part of the initiative, also served as test cases for a practitioner’s guidebook on capacity development for agricultural innovation systems, currently under construction and due to be released in late 2019. The guidebook will be a product of the Feed the Future Innovation Lab for Food Security Policy, and links closely with the ongoing cluster of activities “Science Policy and Innovation Systems for Sustainable Intensification” under PIM’s Flagship 1.
