FLAGSHIP 2 – ECONOMYWIDE FACTORS AFFECTING AGRICULTURAL GROWTH AND RURAL TRANSFORMATION: JULY – SEPTEMBER 2019 UPDATES

The new book "Ghana’s economic and agricultural transformation: Past performance and future prospects" edited by Xinshen Diao, Peter Hazell, Shashidhara Kolavalli, and Danielle Resnick offers key insights into harnessing agriculture’s potential in the country. Read more and watch video presentations from the book launch event.

On September 11-12, PIM organized a workshop on Political economy for improved policy analysis and implementation in CGIAR which convened social scientists from across CGIAR to discuss political economy analysis and its integration in the CGIAR research agenda. Danielle Resnick, leader of Cluster 2.3: Political Economy and Policy Processes and key organizer of the event, shares her reflections in this blog. (Keynote video presentations available).

PIM was present in the 6th African Conference of Agricultural Economists, held from 23-26 September in Abuja. Among the various contributions of PIM scientists was an invited panel on "The Role of Institutional Capacity Development in Africa’s Agricultural Transformation”, led by Flagship 2 co-leader Thomas Jayne and PIM Director Frank Place, which attracted more than 75 participants. Prof. Jayne also presented PIM-supported work on the rise of medium-scale farmers in Africa, co-authored with Dr. Milu Muyanga.

Prof. Thomas Jayne  moderated a side event on “Megatrends Driving Agrifood System Transformation in Africa” as part of the African Green Revolution Forum 2019 held on September 3-6 in Accra, Ghana.

Jenny Smart and Hosaena Ghebru presented at the Market Systems Development Best Practices Dissemination Workshop in Maputo, Mozambique on July 18, 2019, co-organized by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), and Development Alternatives Inc. (DAI). Colleagues presented the work undertaken as part of the Flaghsip 2 activity "Efficient Rural Service Delivery/Crowding-in agricultural services from the private sector." Concept note and presentations are available here.
